The Ecole Mill Bay Roots & Shoots Club was started in the 2009/2010 school year. Roots & Shoots is an international hands-on environmental and humanitarian education program that is about making positive change happen — for our communities, for animals and for the environment. Started in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students who wanted to make a difference in their community, R&S is now a growing global program based on the principle that everyone has the ability to bring about change. Last year, the EMB R&S Club came up with a list of 10 things we can do to help the environment. This school year, we have been using this list to make a difference in the world, one issue at a time. The R&S Club meets one lunch hour per week and is made up of about fifty students from grades 2 through 4. With these students and some dedicated parent helpers, we have tackled some big topics. Our entry for the Green Games focuses on the three themes we have looked at so far this school year: "Don't Be Idle!", "Meatless Monday" and "Where in the World?". R&S has succeeded in raising awareness of these issues in the school and the wider community in addition to raising some funds for both local and global causes. Included here is a video of some of our successes from this school year.
